Hot Water Problems that May Not Be Your Water Heater

There’s nothing like a hot shower to get your day started on the right foot. But when that water comes out ice cold, it can not only ruin your day, but it also may indicate that you are having issues with your water heating system. While it’s easy to blame your water heater, it is not always responsible for why your water is not heating properly. Here are some other causes of water heating problems that may have nothing to do with your water heater itself.

Improper Plumbing

The first place you should start when determining the cause of your water heating problems is your plumbing. Since hot water heaters work in sync with the plumbing in your home, a lack of hot water could point to a failing plumbing component. If your hot water heater is relatively new and you’re experiencing issues, a faulty installation job of the plumbing components could also be to blame. If plumbing is to blame, you may notice the following:

  • Leaks
  • Loud noises
  • Low water pressure
  • Inability to maintain water temperature

No Fuel Supply

Whether your tank runs on gas or electric, one of the most common reasons water is not sufficiently heated is that the fuel source has been interrupted or accidentally turned off. It could also be caused by a trip in your breaker or a gas leak. If you smell gas around your water heater, you should shut everything down immediately. We don’t recommend that you try to address these issues yourself – err on the safe side and call us to come check it out.

Wrong Tank Size

While your hot water heater itself may be functioning properly, running out of hot water may be a sign that your tank is the wrong size. The tank size you need depends on several factors, including the size of your home, the number of people in your family, available storage space and the type of fuel sources that you have access to in your area. The experts at Custom Aire will be able to determine this for you when you call on us for help.

Overuse

If all of the aforementioned elements are in check, your home’s hot water usage may be to blame. For instance, if multiple showers are being used simultaneously, or if your showers are being used repeatedly in a relatively short period of time, you can run out of hot water. If you suspect this is the cause, you’ll simply need to wait until your water heater can catch up with the demand and reheat the water to an ideal temperature. However, if the water fails to heat properly again within an hour, you may have a more serious issue on your hands.
